Local opera singer lifts spirits in street with a safe distanced recital with husband

Our very own local opera singer lifted the spirits recently with a safely distanced recital accompanied by her husband. To have the street filled with an exquisite voice was medicine for everyone. Just amazing! And she is booked to sing at the Met in New York later in the year as and when it is safe to do - real class then!

Solitude in lockdown, strong sunlight creates great contrast

Black & white seems to add emphasis to the subject. Strong sunlight picks out a sole individual on walk during lockdown and adds contrast to the image with a lengthening tree shadows in the foreground. The person has the lake side to themselves on this sunny afternoon.

In the park before sunrise, Easter morning and a sole duck does a sword in the lake, Excalibur impression.

On a very, very quiet Eastet day morning walk before sunrise, with so few people about for a number of reasons, nature carries on regardless and this duck seemed to perform on que and gave me a sword in the lake impression on a very calm pond.

Early morning winter light catches bronzed leaves and highlights a clear line between the tree tips.

Early morning walks can reveal some lovely suprises that catch the eye. Here the sun has caught the remaining leaves of trees to show a line between the tips of three or four trees. I suspect that they are in conversation with each other. Older and wiser that most of us!

Drawings by Barbara Walker at Turner Contemporary, Margate, Kent.

On a blustery day in September a quick peek into the Turner Contemporary gallery and the first thing you see is 'Place, Space and Who'. A show by Barbara Walker of five large portrait drawings of African women who have settled in Margate dominate the entrance hall. Good to see work done by hand and eye rather than a concept rendered by technology, I think drawing remains a very powerful and intimate medium, more so than photography, well at least digital.

Canoe Festival. International descent of the Sella River

Close up shot of competitors carving the water on the international descent of the Sella River, an event held since 1930. It has become one of the most important dates on the international canoeing calendar.  On the first Saturday in August, canoeists from all over the world come to Asturias to take part in the Sella River race. More than one thousand canoes paddle it out to be first home over the 20-kilometre course on the Sella River, which runs from the village of Arriondas to the finish line in Ribadesella. The shores are littered with supporters shouting encouragement - I'd need it!

Seat and rock, interior part of art installation in private garden, northern Spain

This interior shot of light from one of two entrances of this curved corridor illuminating a seat and rock was part of an outdoor art installation in a private garden in northern Spain. The Garden contained a number of art pieces that reflected the interest and passion of the owners who run a small hotel that is more like a private house. Guests enjoy a tranquil atmosphere surrounded by the foothills of Picos moutains and a large modern house exhibiting a variety bold contemporary Spanish work and a wonderful art library to relax in.

London - 5000 meter runners at IAAF Diamond League Muller Games at the London Stadium

Three of the worlds most talented long distance runners wind down after finishing the 5000 meters at the Diamond League Muller Games at the London stadium, Kenyans, Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli, Rhonex Kipruto and Paul Kipngetich Tanui. It was great to see so many wonderful athletes turning on the afterburners for our enjoyment on a sunny afternoon in London.

The 1934 Bentley Derby Coupe by Thrupp & Maberley used by Crowley in Good Omens

The very car, a 1934 Bentley Coupe as used by Crowley (David Tennant) in the production of Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaimans 'Good Omens' starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant. Pic was shot in Soho whilst on a publicity event to promote the Netflix and BBC2 release of the series. The car from Classic Bentley Car hire is called Mary by the owner and possibly the only Thrupp & Maberley Coupe left. This is a proper motor car with all the right proportions; long bonnet, engine behind front axle and cab back, it creates an imposing presence. I got to sit in it and felt a proper gent for a second and enjoyed a good chat with the owner.

Winter seascape - heavy clouds gather at dusk over the Solent.

No apologies but the coast/beach in winter can be the most invigorating place to be. And at dusk you can be in for a treat with great gnarly weather, a mixture of cloud and light. You can see the horizon punctuated with distant lights.

Family play in the shallows. Autumn sunset on the incoming tide - south coast

The last knockings of the day and the best place to be in autumn - on the beach. A family plays in the shallows as the sun sets and the tide comes in to cover their playground. Sheer bliss for everyone.

Imperial War Museum Duxford - Battle of Britain airshow

A kneeling WRAF officer in period clothes gazes at the spectators during the Battle of Britain airshow at Imperial War Museum Duxford with a line of assorted Spifires on right ready to take flight. Their pilots are the in distance in their period uniform. And here's the thing, these planes were flown in from all over the country by ther owners for the day and they flew them home at the end. Forget arriving in a supercar - flying in and out in your own Spitfire now that's panache!

Night time fishing on calm tide.

Night time fisherman casting from the seawall on a very calm incoming tide somewhere on the south coast. Aided by a solitary lamp. The water was inky and very dark. What lurks beneath?

Alfa Romeo back on track in the BTCC

Something to celebrate. Alfa Romeo is back in the British Touring Car Championship with driver Rob Austin and Handy Motorsport. They are using the FWD Giulietta for this season. Alfa Romeo has won the BTCC title twice, first with Andy Rouse in 1983 with an Alfetta GTV6 and the second coming in 1994 with Italian Gabriele Tarquini driving an Alfa Romeo 155. So the marque has form here!

Blown sand

Sand being blown across a huge beach at low tide like a gritty mist. A strange sensation, the beach is alive and moving around you. You are a welcome guest but be mindful as the nature of the beach and tide make no allowances for the unwatchful.
